Copycat Voodoo Donuts

Easy, homemade, copycat voodoo donuts! I made these for my brother’s birthday and they were a huge hit!

Growing up, my grandma would make “maple sticks” for holidays and everyone loved them! I got my hands on this recipe as I was making a family recipe book, and the first time I made them, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy they were to make! Before, anything that needed to be fired was very intimidating to me. Luckily this recipe for easy homemade maple bars is so simple, anyone can do it!

My brother is easily one of my favorite people, and so I knew I wanted to make something extra special for his birthday! So, I took my grandma’s fool-proof maple bar recipe, and all I did was change up the frosting to make copycat voodoo donuts! My brother loved them, and definitely ate more than one!

Recipe Tips & Tricks

There are a few things that will make baking homemade donuts these a million times easier, one of them being a digital candy thermometer. My husband got me the kitchen aid digital thermometer and it is incredible! When you fry dough, the temperature of the oil tends to fluctuate as the fresh dough is added (because the dough is cold, it cools down the oil) so having a digital thermometer was life-saving and really made the difference in ease of frying, so I could check the oil temperature before I added more dough! Before I had one, I had to fry things based off-color, and it only takes a few seconds for a doughnut to go from perfectly golden, to overly crunchy.

Frying Donuts

I used my dutch oven to fry the donuts, and I also tried to fry the donuts in my air fryer! The dutch oven held the heat ten times more evenly than a traditional pot! The air fryer also worked great, the donuts were not as puffy as traditionally fried donuts, but they still turned out great!

Another big tip making these is to be sure to sprinkle the Oreos on while the frosting is still wet, so pretty fast after you dip the donuts in frosting.

Easy, delicious, and surprisingly easy to make! These copycat voodoo donuts will make you think you are eating the real thing!

Ingredients

  • ½ cup Butter
  • ½ cup Sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • Tbs Yeast (or 2 packets)
  • 2 cups water (110°)
  • 7½-8 cups Flour

Frosting

  • 2 cups Powdered Sugar
  • 2 tbs Milk
  • 2 Tbs Vanilla extract
  • Crushed Oreos

Instructions

  • Sprinkle yeast over warm water (110 degrees, about 50 sec in the microwave) and let the yeast activate for 5 minutes.
  • Cream butter and sugar. Then add the eggs and salt.
  • Add the activated yeast and flour into the creamed butter mixture. Knead with dough attachment in a stand mixer, or on the counter until the dough is smooth
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, and let it rise until it has doubled, about an hour.
  • Once the dough has risen, roll out into a ½ inch thick sheet. Cut into rectangle shapes or use a cookie cutter to make traditional donut shapes.
  • Let the cut dough rise for another hour.
  • After the dough has risen for a second time, fry in oil. Use a candy theremometer to make sure the oil stays at or around 375 degrees. Fry for 1 minute, then flip over the donut and fry for 1 more minute.
  • Remove the doughnut from the oil, onto a cooling rack and paper towel to remove excess grease.
  • Allow the donuts to cool before frosting.

Frosting

  • Mix the powdered sugar, vanilla and milk in a bowl. Crush oreos into a seperate bowl.
  • Add the frosting into a shallow bowl and dip and swirl the top of the cooled donuts into the frosting, quickly sprinkle crushed Oreos on top!
