Traditional Swedish Recipes
I love digging into my Swedish roots and trying traditional Swedish recipes! I have had this recipe for Braided Swedish Coffee Bread tagged in my recipe collection because it sounded so delicious and who doesn’t love bread! Yeast bread are some of my favorite bread to make, I love the flavor of the dough and the process of the leaven creating a delicious light dough. I love braided Swedish Coffee Bread because it is lightly sweet (unlike American coffee bread/cake) and flavored with cardamom, which is a very common spice in Swedish baking. In fact, you will almost always find cardamon in Swedish bread recipes.
This is my Grandma’s recipe for Braided Swedish Coffee Bread. It was incredibly simple to make and is essentially one of those throw-it-all-in-a-bowl and mix-it-up recipes! The cardamon flavor is so warm and adds a really good extra layer of flavor to the bread that you don’t have with other yeasted doughs!

Recipe Tips & Tricks
This recipe is relatively straightforward to make! But a good tip is to make sure you knead the dough long enough. Whether in a mixer or by hand, be sure to do the “windowpane test” by pulling a small piece of dough. If it stretches real thin, that means you mixed enough! If the dough just breaks, it needs a bit longer kneading.
I highly recommend weighing each piece before braiding. I know it’s easy to think that you can “eyeball” each piece, but braiding will be really hard if one piece is even a little bigger than the other. I love this scale!
