This recipe is not one of my grandma’s, but one that is close to my heritage. While I have never been to Sweden, A big part of my family is Swedish, so I wanted to make my own version of these Swedish Cinnamon & Cardamon Buns. They do not take much time and are a really flavorful alternative to a cinnamon roll which can be over-sweet. With the sprinkle of sugar instead of frosting, these buns make an excellent dessert or even breakfast 😉
Ingredients you will need
Recipe Tips & Tricks
Stand mixer– for kneading the dough, option but very handy.
Bowl- for rising the dough
Rolling pin- for making the very big dough rectangle
Cardamon spice– I had a hard time finding it at the grocery store, so I just ordered some!
How to make Swedish Cinnamon & Cardamon Buns
In your stand mixer, add the warm water (110 degrees max) melted butter, and yeast. Let that sit for about 5 minutes until the yeast gets bubbly!
Then add the eggs, milk, and salt and stir with a spoon so everything is mixed. Add the 5 cups of flour, and cinnamon, and cardamon, 1 cup at a time, mixing between. Knead in a mixer for 5 minutes, or by hand for about 10-12, until the dough is elastic.
Shape into a ball and let it rise for an hour
Take the dough onto a floured surface, and roll it into a rectangle that is about 15 inches by 20 inches.
Spread butter, then dust with sugar, cinnamon, cardamon mixture and use your rolling pin over the sugar so it is pressed into the dough.
Fold the short end 1/3 of the way over, then fold the other end on top of that one.
Roll until this rectangle is 10×12 inches. and make the strips a little less than an inch thick.
Roll the strips into the Swedish buns, this is a really great video I found to help me roll them properly!
Place the rolls on a baking sheet, and let them rise again until they have doubled in size, usually about another hour.
Make the egg and milk wash and brush over the buns.
Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes, until they are golden on the outside.
