This is one of the few recipes that I did not get from my grandma, but it was because of her that I was inspired to even bake in the first place. This is one of the easiest sourdough recipes you will find, I love baking bread in a cast-iron skillet, for the shape and flavor! But this recipe can also be made in 2 loaf pans.
Sourdough is one of my favorite things to make and this recipe is the easiest and most fool-proof bread recipe that I have found. Nothing tastes better than a fresh-cut slice of sourdough bread. It also makes a great egg sandwich or jelly toast! Sourdough also has lots of health benefits.
Because sourdough uses natural yeast to leaven, this recipe takes two days to complete, so keep that in mind when you start it 🙂

Recipe Tips & Tricks
- If you do not have a sourdough starter, King Arthur Flour has a very comprehensive guild to make your own! (which is how I made mine) Or you can buy one, I recommend this one from Amazon.
- 10 inch cast iron skillet or 2 loaf pans

How to make Sourdough Skillet Bread
- DAY 1: take your soundough starter and add it to a bowl. Then add the flour and mix it up. Cover and let it sit overnight in a warm place. I like putting mine under the microwave light on the counter!
- The next morning, take the dough and put it in a stand mixer. Add 1 ¾ cups water and mix so all the dough is saturated.
- Add the salt and flour.
- Mix in a stand mixer with the dough hook for 2-3 mins. Or knead on a lightly floured surface for 7-8 minutes.
- This is a soft dough so it will be and a little sticky
- Place the dough back into an oiled bowl and let it rise again until doubled about 1-3 hours. TIP: if it is a warm day, place the bowl of dough in your warm car and it will rise beautifully)
- After the dough has doubled in size, place into a cast-iron skillet or two loaf pans that have been dusted with flour.
- Cover with a towel and let rise again for 45-90 minutes or until the dough has doubled again. At this time preheat oven to 400 degrees F
- Once the loaf has risen bake in an oven at 400 degrees for 35-40 minutes
- Once they are finished baking, cool on a rack for at least 1 hour.
