Ingredients you will need
All ingredients for this recipe are super common and you should have most things lying around! If you are missing something, or even want to mix it up and add some different kinds of fruit, go for it! This is a great recipe that is easily adaptable and very flexible
Apple Crisp Filling Ingredients
- Apples: The main base, offering a sweet and tart flavor while maintaining a soft texture when baked in the skillet.
- Sugar: Enhances the natural sweetness of the apples
- Cornstarch: Acts as a thickening agent in the filling, making sure the juice from the apples don’t get too runny
- Lemon Juice: Adds a touch of acidity to brighten the flavors of the apples and prevent browning.
- Raisins (optional): Add additional texture and a layer of sweetness if included.
Apple Crisp Topping Ingredients
- Flour: The foundation of the crisp topping, contributing structure and a slightly crumbly texture.
- Quick oats: Add a hearty and nutty dimension to the topping, creating a satisfying contrast to the soft fruit filling.
- Nutmeg: Spice adds additional flavor to both the filling and topping, enhancing the overall flavor
- Butter: Binds the crisp topping ingredients, promoting a golden and crispy texture while adding richness to the dish.
Recipe Tips & Tricks
It is important to use a good auality cast iron skillet that is well seasoned. If the pan is not seasoned well, that is when things stick to the bottom. Lodge cast iron skillets come pre-seasoned and are the best quality I have found. They also can be baked in the oven which is important!
Corn starch is an important component in this recipe becuase it ensures the crips is not runny! When the apples cook down, they release their juice and cornstarch helps thicken it up.

This sounds like a really great recipe. I’m becoming a bit more open to apple desserts lately, will deftly have to try this one out.
Looks yummy. Thanks for sharing!!
I love to add fresh cranberries to my apple crisp, gives it a wonderful color and tangy flavor to balance the sweetness of the apples! I have my Mom’s recipe but will add your grandma’s to my “recipes to try” list as I like the addition of oatmeal!
Thank you so much for your comment! Cranberries and apples sound so good together! I will have to give that a try too! 🙂
